IT governance is a capability that leads to better business performance. New business realities and demands -- globally connected enterprises, greater strategic alignment, increased business agility and intense corporate assurance --create heightened expectations from IT governance. This exacerbates the need for innovation -- approaches, frameworks, practices, models and benchmarks--to share current theory and practices of IT governance. For many enterprises, the challenge is to adopt effective IT governance of IT without being overly controlling, thus ensuring stakeholder fulfillment. These tensions oftern are played out in the governance processes where computing objectives and incentives must be resolved for organisational coherence. The business questions addressed in this seminar include:

* What are the current challenges impacting IT governance?
* How do new and emerging challenges influence innovation in IT governance?
* What is the current state of innovations that are expected to become mainstream practice?
* How can enterprises achieve superior alignment, agility and assurance?
* What role do standards play in the ongoing business scenario?

Governance Success, Controlling Inside and Outside the Organisation

by Graham Coombes, Capgemini UK

This presentation examines how hitting the IT Governance and Service Management 'sweet spot' can help organisations cement and successfully support their IT relationships and avoid the costly impact of the failure of IT investments. Although positioned from the outsourcing market, the principles and examples are relevant to any business wanting to use IT as a business enabler.

From IT Governance to Enterprise Governance of IT: A Journey for Creating Business Value Out of IT

by Prof Wim Van Grembergen, University of Antwerp / ISACA International

"Enterprise Governance of IT" (EGIT) is a relatively new name for IT Governance, more clearly referring to the responsibilities of the business. Enterprise governance of IT is about defining and embedding processes and structures in the organisations that enable both business and IT people to execute their responsibilities in creating value from IT-enabled business investments. Professor Wim Van Grembergen will provide a complete and comprehensive overview of what Enterprise Governance of IT entails and how it can be applied in practice. His will share his knowledge obtained in applied research projects, his many years of involvement in the development of COBIT and Val IT, and his hands-on experience in many industries in governance and alignment projects. Professor Van Grembergen will also focus on the different EGIT structures, processes and relational mechanisms, COBIT 4.1 and VAL IT 2.0 as important EGIT frameworks, and the relationship between EGIT practices, business/IT alignment and business outcome.

IT Governance Capability ? A Foundation for Architecting the Connected Government

by Dr Pallab Saha, Institute of Systems Science, National University of Singapore

Countries aiming to transform their Governments require a more sophisticated e-government model that links the citizens, businesses, organisations and other government entities in a seamless network of assets, capabilities, resources and infrastructure. This is the essence of Connected Government. Singapore has consistently demonstrated its ability to design, develop and adopt e-government of the highest standards. This is an outcome of visionary leadership, clear objectives, sound execution mechanisms and use of leading edge technologies. The Government Enterprise Architecture has played a pivotal role in shifting Singapore from e-government to connected government. Governance is a foundational capability for creating and improving government enterprise architecture. In the context of Connected Government it is even more crucial and difficult because it involves multiple organisations and levels of government. This session unfolds the key highlights of this journey.

Governance Standard

by John Graham, ISACA International

Governance is one of the most used and abused words in the IT community. International standardisation has a major role in removing or resolving misunderstandings or different interpretations of an idea. Governance is a concept that requires clarification. ISO/IEC JTC1 WG6 has a mandate to resolve issues relating to governance in and applied to IT. As part of its mandate, it is required to produce a model relating to governance and management of IT. It is hoped that this model will start to resolve the cultural and interpretive issues surrounding the concept of governance as applied to IT. ISO and IEC are two major international standards bodies. JTC1 is a joint technical committee of these organisations that has a scope encompassing IT. JTC1 is recognised by both organisations as having the lead in this field. This presentation gives an overview of the international standards environment and the issues confronting WG6 in the field of the Governance of IT.
