ITSC is proud to bring to you an E-Learning Standards Seminar on 6 November 2009.

Organised jointly by the Learning Standards Technical Committee (LSTC) under the IT Standards Committee (ITSC), and the SIM University (UniSIM), this seminar will focus on the role of e-learning standards in the instructional design, learning object-based e-learning, interoperability and content sequencing. There will also be a hands-on workshop where participants can carry out some interoperability tests and content sequencing using some learning objects.

Workshop on interoperability and content sequencing

This workshop aims to clarify three important areas in e-learning. These are learning objects, interoperability and content sequencing. As e-learning becomes pervasive, many e-learning practitioners face difficulties like the myriad of definitions for learning objects; the over-selling of system interoperability or interoperability claims made by LMS vendors and the inability to provide different learning sequences to the learners.

During this workshop, the participant will use some sample learning objects and examine how they are designed and developed. Participants will try out sample e-learning courses. They will get to understand why e-learning contents have to be structured as SCOs - Shareable Content Objects - if they want to track the learning patterns of learners, keep the scores of the learners or even bookmark the learning content.

Three different SCORM 2004 3rd Edition compliant LMSs (Ilias, testtrack.scorm.com and Blackboard) will be used to test the interoperability of selected learning-object based contents. There will be a discussion on the feature differences of the various SCORM 2004 3rd Edition compliant LMSs. Participants can also carry out simple conformance tests to ensure that their learning content packages conform to the particular e-learning standard. In this way, they will not be misled by different claims made by LMS vendors.

Finally, the participant will try out some learning objects that allow the learner to learn the subject matter in several different ways. These include the following sequencing strategies: no sequencing, linear, knowledge-paced, competency-based and remediation. These are all based on the SCORM 2004 3rd Edition Specification. By providing different content learning sequences to the learners, we can encourage the learners to choose the learning path they are comfortable with. At the same time, such an approach will engage the learners in self-directed, independent learning.

The above seminar is brought to you by Information Technology Standards Committee (ITSC), an industry partnership supported by SPRING Singapore and IDA Singapore.
