The Learning Standards Technical Committee (LSTC) is one of the 13 technical committees set up by the IT Standards Committee of Singapore (ITSC, www.itsc.org.sg).

The LSTC was formed in 2000 with members from representatives from the educational institutions, private and government sectors.  Over the years, it has introduced some 9 Singapore Standards on e-learning.  It has also worked with the MOE to come out with the CEMS (Content Exchange Metadata Standard, http://www.standards.org.sg/files/Vol13no2art3.htm) and the Digital Content Framework. The LSTC has also organized two ITSC PlugFests (in 2002 and 2004) where e-learning vendors tested their contents and LMSs against selected international e-learning specifications.

In addition, since 2000, the LSTC has been organizing annual e-learning standards seminars with the following objectives of

- raising the awareness of current and emerging e-learning standards,

- familiarizing the participants about national or other e-learning initiatives, and

- sharing best practices on the use of e-learning and e-learning standards.

For this year, we will be holding a seminar on Friday, 16 November 2012, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm.  For this year, we have decided to share what we know about Open Educational Resources (OER) and the next generation of the SCORM specification.  This will be a free seminar and we are targeting e-learning practitioners in the education and training sectors to attend.

This half-day tutorial presents the basics of Python to beginning and intermediate programmers. It pairs well with Python 102 which follows a similar outline but goes much deeper.

Rather than starting with "Hello, world!", we use the interactive Python interpreter shell to get hands-on familiarity with much of core Python before covering blocks and scripts. The tutorial is divided into short sections, each with presentation and hands-on exercises, to quickly cover lots of ground.

Advanced topics are introduced throughout and covered in "extra credit" exercises such that more advanced participants can learn at their own pace.

This tutorial is for programmers with experience in other languages who want a fast hands-on introduction to Python. Content will target both Python 3.1 and 2.6.

Requirements:
1. Bring your own laptop with Python 2.6 or 3.1 installed.
2. Bring your own HSDPA dongle if you have one.
3. Try to get as much of an overview of Python before the tutorial as you have time to in order to get more out of the tutorial. Two resources are the Python Quick Reference and the Python website's tutorial.
4. Be on time.

Note 1: The organiser reserves the right to change the programme without prior notice.
Note 2: Priority will be given to competition participants, please enter your CXA 2012 team name during registration.
Note 3: The tutorial is part of the PyCon Asia-Pacific conference taking place in Singapore from 7 - 9 June (http://apac.pycon.org/2012/d/index)

As Singapore increasingly becomes an ageing society, the pressure is on us to look after the Silver Generation, a generation that has formed the backbone of our country for years. During this year’s code::XtremeApps:: Programming Competition Prize Presentation, learn how IT and standards play an important role in the care and assistance of the Silver Generation.

Also, experience hands on how technology can be incorporated to solve real-life challenges faced by the Silver Generation in an exclusive showcase of web-based and mobile applications created by the finalists of the code::XtremeApps:: Programming Competition. We invite industry leaders and experts to network and lend their advice to the finalists, and inspire them to take their applications and ideas to the next level.
